"Devil's Bridge" near the village of Dyadovtsi

There used to be a Roman bridge at its present location, which was part of the famous ancient road "Via Ignasia" connecting the Aegean Sea and Thrace via Makaza Pass. The bridge was known as "Sheitan kiupria" ( "Devil"s bridge in Turkish).
An interesting fact is that the central arch of the Devil"s Bridge is an open engraved hexagon, which researchers today call "The seal of Solomon."
According to some local legends, the footprint of the Devil can be seen on the stones and the place itself brought death and misery to anyone who dared to approach. Another legend has it that Satan saved a Bulgarain girl from certain death when he appeared before Turkish horse riders who were chasing her. The girl wanted to end her life by throwing herself in the water, when the Turks suddenly turned their way, believing they had seen horns in the river.
One of the most popular legends tells that the master builder walled in the bridge the shadow of the damsel that was bringing him food and thus " sentenced" the bridge to steadiness in time, while the girl to death. .
According to recent studies, however, the reason for the construction of the Devil"s Bridge is explained by another, little-known legend. The local people had been trying to raise a bridge between the two banks, but each time the mighty river waters destroyed what had been built. And when the builders, assuming that the place was cursed, decided to stop trying, a young master took up the task. He intended to sacrifice his beloved (by embedding her shadow) to build the bridge. Suddenly came the Devil, who revealed the secret of sustainable construction to the master, but he set conditions. To make the bridge strong and eternal, it had to be an effigy of Satan, to be equally visible and invisible, able to be touched and yet not materialized. Moreover, it all had to be completed within 40 days. Otherwise, the Evil One would take the souls of the master and his bride. To the astonishment of everyone, including the Devil, the master builder fulfilled all conditions. But soon afterwards he passed away and his secret remained unsolved. But the fact is that the Devil"s Bridge still stands unshaken along with the ominous image embedded in it.
The secret why the image is visible, yet not, can be touched, but not quite, is the rock under the water, just below the central dome. It is carved in half and the one half is the reflection seen in the water. Right above it is the arch over the bridge, which is also reflected in the water and thus forms a circle. Everything is like a perfect reflection. The image of the devil is visible only at the time of day (most likely between 11:00 and 12:00) when the position and strength of the sun are such that the bridge and its reflection in the water surface, i.e. bridge and its shadow completely coincide. To be able to imagine it more easily, take a photo of the bridge and the water at this time of day and flip it vertically.
