Golemiyat Sipey (the Big Scree) protected site

The Golemiyat Sipey protected site has an area of 653.9 ha. It is located on the northern shore of the Studen Kladenets dam lake. It includes rock complexes, shrubs and oak woods, which are crucially important for the preservation of bird fauna. 129 bird species nidificate here, of which 20 are included in Bulgaria’s Red Book and 47 have an unfavorable natural protection status in Europe. Among them are: the griffon vulture, the Egyptian vulture, the owl, the long-legged buzzard, the black stork, the masked shrike, the rock nuthatch, the short-toed eagle, the black kite. For the griffon vulture, Golemiyat Sipey is one of the two most important places to nidificate in in this country. Here between 9 and 14 couples have their nests, of about a total of 30 for the country. The protected site is part of the Studen Kladenets bird area which is important on a worldwide scale. In the region, 7 of the 9 binomially limited species found in the country and characteristic of the Mediterranean zone can be found – the Spanish wheatear, the big olive mocking-bird, the small black-headed garden warbler, the red-breasted garden warbler, the masked shrike, the black-headed bunting, and the rock nuthatch. The only colony in Bulgaria of the Grey heron is to be found here, settling on rocks.
