Maroneia cave

Rating:
(0)

The cave has length of approximately 350 meters and width of 15-20m and it’s protected as an archaeological site. It is closed to the general public and only scientific groups are allowed inside for research. Inside the cave there are drip and stalagmite forms and rare fauna inhabiting 10 of the 300 bat species in Europe. Archaeological excavations have brought to light ceramic objects which indicate that the cave was inhabited in the Neolithic period. According to legend, Odysseus, with his companions, were trapped in the cave by Cyclops, when they rached the coast of Maroneia. Using the Maroneitiko wine, they managed to get drunk and escaped the Cyclops.
