Prey's shelter of Vistonida Lake

Rating:
(1)

Within the municipality is the Vistonida Lake, which occupies an area of 45,000 square meters and its depth varies from 2 to 3.5 meters. The lake is the natural recipient of all mountain streams of the region and in this spills the rivers Kosynthos and Kompsatos (Kourou). In the lake and the lagoon, there are complex ecosystems which accommodate a variety of fauna, particularly birds and fish fauna. The diversity of flora is also significant there, with the dominant vegetation to be formed by various kinds of sand hills. However, the lake is facing problems of pollution from urban sewage and industrial waste that end up in the waters through the rivers. Nevertheless, this habitat is under the state’s protection as part of a network of the protected areas of “Natura 2000” and has been declared an animal shelter.
