Next to the Greek-Bulgarian borders lies the quaint village of Metaxades. Most of the village’s houses are an example of a unique and rare architecture. Classic and elaborate, the houses are built with the local stone and timber, which are carved on hand until today, making the village one of the prettiest of the Prefecture. The use of stone, both as an outdoor decorative and an insulating element, the use of wooden frames in the masonries, the numerous rooms with their small windows in succession and the volume of the upper floor overhanging at an oblique angle, consist the special architecture of Metaxades.
