White stones

The „Belite Kamuni” (The White Stones) is a mountain peak above the village Startsevo. The name comes from the bare white limestone rocks on the top. It reveals a magnificent view to almost the entire Eastern Rhodopes.
Archaeological surveys of the top show that in some of the deep crevices of the rocks Thracians placed coins, pottery, wheat, millet and then plastered with clay the crack. Archaeologists suggest that these are gifts - chthonic sacrifices (to the underworld gods) which confurmed the staus of Belite Kamuni as ancient sanctuary. Judging by the dating of the coins found, it was used from V BC to IV AD (almost one thousand years). Perhaps when Christianity was proclaimed the official religion of the Roman Empire in 330 AD the sanctuary was abandoned.
The most impressive historical site located in the Belite Kamuni is a sanctuary dedicated to the Sun God. It is the largest of the unique sanctuaries located along the road between Perperikon and Zlatograd.
