Reserve "Chamlak"

Rating:
(0)

This is the smallest maintained reserve in Kardzhali District. Its area is 30 acres. It faces northeast. The altitude is 450 m and the bedrock comprises sandstone. The soil is deep and fresh maroon.
"Chamlak" is a black pine forest reserve. Besides the pine, there are many winter oak and Italian oak trees. In some places the winter oak is quite high and forms a second tree floor, but for the most part it occupies the lower vegetation layer (the undergrowth). In this same layer there is cornel tree, rose hips, juniper, broom, and sumac. The reserve has a distinct buffer zone in which there is undergrowth of pine self-seeders. The trees are very healthy and give life to fruitful seed. Unfortunately, the buffer zone can no longer be expanded, as there are the surrounding farmlands and villages. No special research has been made in the reserve. There are no specific details either for the vegetation or the wildlife. In 1956, when “Chamlak” was announced a reserve, the average age of the pine trees was 56 years old, the oldest was 120 years old. The average height was 16 m and the diameter was 22cm.
